After the Crash: How One Patient’s Search for Answers Led to a Life-Changing Diagnosis

For years, Leopoldo Garcia lived life in motion. As a commercial truck driver, the road was his workplace and, after years of trudging highways, his home. Long hours behind the wheel demanded focus, endurance, and resilience. It was a lifestyle he knew well, one that kept him active and allowed him the ability to venture on the open road on the open road.

However, two and a half years ago, everything changed in the blink of an eye in the form of a life-changing car wreck.

“My neck, my shoulders, and my knee were in excruciating pain,“ Leopoldo recalls. “I was hurting everywhere, and I couldn’t think straight.“

What he didn’t realize was that the accident had caused much more damage than was visible on the surface. He had no idea that his path to recovery would be long, but Advanced Diagnostics was confident it could help.

Looking Beyond the Immediate Injury

After the crash, Leopoldo was referred to Advanced Diagnostics Healthcare System for a comprehensive medical evaluation. What was initially planned as a week-long series of appointments at River Oaks Hospital & Clinics soon became the starting point for a deeper investigation into his health.

From the moment he arrived, he felt the difference.

“They weren’t just checking boxes,” he said. “They really wanted to understand what was going on with me.”

At ADHS, Leopoldo’s care team coordinated a comprehensive diagnostic workup to identify the source of his symptoms. Physicians used advanced diagnostic imaging to create a detailed map of his injuries, including MRIs, CT scans, and a specialized brain scan that required Leopoldo to remain still for over an hour. The results painted a clearer picture of what his body had endured.

Doctors identified a traumatic brain injury, tears in both rotator cuffs, and serious damage to the meniscus and ACL in his right knee. There were also complications linked to previous neck fusion surgery that had gone undiagnosed until now.

But the scans revealed something even more unexpected.

During the evaluation, physicians detected early signs of potential heart-related complications, an issue Leopoldo had never known about before.

“I came in thinking this was only about the accident,” he said. “But they looked at everything. They found problems I didn’t even know I had. Now I can do something about them.”

Rebuilding Through Surgery and Rehabilitation

Once the full scope of the injuries was understood, Leopoldo’s treatment plan began to take shape.

Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Lou performed multiple procedures to repair the damage in Leopoldo’s shoulders and knee. Throughout the process, Dr. Do, his primary physician, helped coordinate his care, monitor progress, and guide each step of recovery

After surgery, Leopoldo started a comprehensive physical therapy and rehabilitation program through ADHS’s Subacute Trauma Program. This program is designed to diagnose patients and provide access to multiple physicians in one location, eliminating the need to visit several facilities for different concerns.

Recovery was not instant. However, over time, with persistence and his care team's support, improvements were undeniable.

Daily movements that once triggered sharp pain gradually became easier to manage. Tasks like getting in and out of his vehicle, walking confidently, and climbing stairs - things he previously overlooked - now felt more meaningful and appreciated.

For the first time since the accident, and much sooner than he expected, Leopoldo returned to light-duty work.

“I’m not all the way there yet, but I’m getting better,” he said. “My shoulders are stronger, my knee feels more stable, and I finally feel like I’m getting back to myself.”

A New Focus on Health and the Future

Recovery has also reshaped Leopoldo’s perspective on his health.

During the months after surgery, he focused on rebuilding his strength and improving his overall health, something he regretted not tending to before the accident. After gaining weight during recovery, he gradually returned to his normal weight range and began light strength training.

Care That Goes Beyond the Diagnosis

For Leopoldo, the biggest difference throughout the experience was the level of communication and support he received from his care team.

“They didn’t treat me like just another patient,” he said. “They took the time to explain everything, step by step. I always understood what was happening and why. That gave me peace of mind.”

Today, Leopoldo continues physical therapy and is managing some lingering nerve pain. But the uncertainty he once felt has been replaced with something far more powerful: clarity.

He understands what happened. He knows what his body requires. And he has a plan for moving forward.

“I still have some healing to do,” he said. “But now I know where I’m going, thanks to Advanced Diagnostics.”
