Why DTI Matters
Even when a conventional MRI looks "normal," microscopic damage can disrupt your brain's wiring after a traumatic injury. DTI detects diffuse axonal injury—the shearing of white-matter fibers responsible for cognition and balance—early on, giving you objective proof of injury and helping you reach Maximum Medical Improvement sooner.
How DTI Works
Water molecules drift randomly in gray matter but travel in neat lines along healthy white-matter tracts. By mapping that directional movement (anisotropy), DTI creates color-coded images that show intact pathways—or highlight areas where trauma has slowed or blocked the flow, guiding your care team to precise therapy.
What to Expect
All ADHS hospitals house high-field MRI scanners equipped for DTI. Your scan takes about 30 minutes, is interpreted by board-certified neuroradiologists, and folds directly into your Subacute Trauma treatment plan. If you need documentation for insurance, legal, or return-to-work purposes, your detailed DTI report provides the quantitative evidence you and your case managers rely on.
